The Independent sambo federation of Georgia was established on May 24, 1991.  Soso Liparteliani became the President of Federation in 2012.

The former presidents of the national sambo federation of Georgia were: Nodar Ekvtimishvili (1991–2004), Omar Iadze (2004–2005), Badri Bitsadze (2005–2007), Giorgi Goguadze (2007–2009), Levan Tedeashvili (2009–2011), Teimuraz Giorgadze (2011–2012). 

The most famous sambo athlete is Djondo Muzashvili. He became the world champion in 1995, 1996 and 1997. Jondo Muzashvili was also the European champion in 1994 and he was three-time prize-winner of the world championship and a prize-winner of the European championship. 

The world champions became the following representatives of Georgia: Genadi Giorgadze (1973 – 48 kg), Levan Tedeashvili (1973 – 90 kg), Iosif Magalashvili (1974 – 52 kg), Sergey Ternovikh (1984 – 52 kg, 1985 – 57 kg), Djemal Mschedlishvili (1987, 1989 – 82 kg), Malhaz Beruashvili (1990, +100 kg), Valery Parunashvili (1991, +100 kg), Archil Chokheli (1993 – 68 kg), Djondo Muzashvili (1995, 1996, 1997 – 74 kg), David Khakhaleishvili (1996, 1997, + 100 kg), Badri Djaniashvili (1997 – 57 kg), Mamuka Kurdgelashvili (1997, 1999 – 62 kg), Iosif Akhalbedashvili (1997 –100 kg), Akaki Khaniashvili (2002 – 57 kg), Mindia Bodaveli (2002 – 90 kg), Ushangi Kuzanashvili (2007 – 52 kg), Mirian Pavliashvili (2007 – 100 kg), Avtandil Tsintsadze (2011 – 52 kg), Giorgi Baindurov (2012 – 90 kg).
